Most individuals, as consumers of the healthcare system, are not familar with their rights within the medical treatment facility.  You, as a consumer, should have a thorough understanding of your basic rights and how these rights impact the medical care you receive.  This site provides information on and links to the laws that control your rights and certain actions of your medical provider.  

The issue of personal healthcare information has received much attention.  In particular, it is a right that private healthcare information remain confidential.  Consumers of healthcare should take steps to educate themselves on their rights with regard to medical treatment, access to medical information and the laws that govern the release of private medical information.  These rights are recognized in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.

You are the consumer and you do have rights.  Please take time to learn these rights and how to protect yourself for improper disclosure of your medical information and assurance of access to quality medical treatment.
